Twenty years after redefining the gritty, urban crime drama with Mean Streets, Martin Scorsese returned to his native New York City with this 1993 adaptation of Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Age Of Innocence.

A tale of forbidden romance set in the milieu of late 19th century high society, the film combines an all-star cast (featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder), breathtaking period design and Scorsese at his stylish, audacious best, for a sumptuous, immersive movie going experience that still dazzles today.

In a 25th anniversary event, Bigger Than Life presents a one-off, 35mm screening, introduced by University of Liverpool’s Professor Janet Beer, who has published widely on the fiction, travel and life writings of Edith Wharton.
